Local media has been reporting on the alarming incidence of suicides among coalmining households of Godavarikhani area of Singareni Collieries.Sometimes there is spurt in the incidence of suicides in the coalmine township. For instance there were five incidents within a week that was alarming. Sometime it was less but it has now become a regular feature of the coalminers? life. It could be a reflection of the deeper malaise that is rooted in growing sense of job insecurity, stress and loss of community support system and lack of orientation towards career or studies. Alcoholism is high among the coalminers from long time. Family disputes are also a matter of concern.  Children are also among those resorting to suicides. Most of the coalminers are dalits. Among the five who committed suicide in September 2004 there were two women. They hanged themselves and died. Domestic violence is suspected to be the cause of these gruesome incidents. There were two middle aged coalmine workers. They were alcoholic. One of them died by hanging and the other by consuming hair dye (Super Vasmol 33).  Domestic problems are suspected to have contributed to their problem. One of them was absent from work for about 7 months.
