SheThe She ethnic group, with a population of about 634,700, mainly lives in the joint area of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces as well as the joint area of Fujian and Zhejiang province, and some are scattered throughout Jiangxi, Guangdong and Anhui provinces. They live in small groups and are widely distributed. They have their own language which belongs to the Miao branch of Miao-Yao family of the Han-Zang Phylum, having two dialects. People speak their own language in their groups and communicate with the outside world in Chinese. Without their own set of characters, Han characters are widely used. The She ethnic group believes in ghosts and gods, and worships their ancestors. Early in the 7 th century, people of She nationality began to settle in the joint area of Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi Provinces. At that time, they were called “Man”, “Manlian” or “Tongman”, etc. Till the Nansong Dynasty were they start called to be Shemin. She people mostly engage in agriculture, besides rice. They also grow tea, sugar cane, and ramie. The economic and cultural development of the She people have become almost the same with that of the Han ethnic group. The modernizing construction in She people's homeland is now developing vigorously. |
