Sculpture

Sculpture is the branch of the fine arts that is primarily concerned with the creation of expressive form in three dimensions. It includes a wide range of different kinds of art works

Works of sculpture are produced by three main processes:

Carving, a reductive process in which the desired form is reached by removing the surplus from a block or similar mass of material such as stone, ivory and wood.
Modeling, an additive process in which the form is built up in a plastic material.
Construction or assembling, in which the sculpture is created by joining ready-made objects and units of material that already have a shape of their own.

Different from Western sculptures, Chinese sculpture pieces remain greatly in form of grottoes represented by Mogao Grottoes and Longmen Grottoes, which have been named as the cultural heritage sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Liu Chuan (1916-2000)

Born in Nanhai of Guangdong, titled Master of arts and Crafts of China 1979.

Liu Chuan's ancestors were ceramists, he learned ceramics since from his twelve age, he studied intensively from the master Pan Yushu and the other maestros, he formed his particular style. The source of his works is very extensive, having folk and life style. He is good at sculpturing the people of ancient costume martial arts, immortals and arhats, grasping the peak of scene to pop out the typical character of the person. His works are famous for capable and experienced image building, enriched connotation, cheesy dressing. He has deep influence in ceramic of Shiwan, winning the title of the Generation Master of Arts and Crafts.
